On Thursday 26 July, Year 7 attended the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and the Japanese Gardens at Mount Coot-tha as part of Activity Week. At the Planetarium, students were able to walk around the exterior of the Planetarium and look at the pictures and texts relating to the solar system. We then entered the amphitheatre to see a film about the Earth, Solar System, the Sun’s gravitational pull, our radio sphere, other moons and planets, and the Milky Way.
The second part of the excursion involved students splitting into small groups to participate in many workshops at the Japanese Gardens, including sumi-e, which is a form of Japanese ink-wash painting. Students were also able to enter the Gardens, which were designed by Kenzo Ogata for the World Expo 88 at Southbank, and later transferred to Mount Coot-tha. The Year 7s found the gardens to be a very calming and serene space, complete with a small waterfall, a river, wooden bridges and viewing areas.
