World Scholars’ Cup Prep Begins!

World Scholars’ Cup Prep Begins!

Author: Barbara Mossman

Fuelled by the excitement of students who experienced success in both the Brisbane Round and the Global Round of the World Scholars’ Cup in 2018, eight teams of CHAC students have begun their preparation for this year’s Brisbane Round of the international competition. This year’s event will again be held at Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) over the first two days of the Easter holidays.

Training for the event requires close collaboration between each team of three students in order to cover the daunting range of knowledge needed in the event. Along the way, students enjoy discovering how to share their scholarship with one another in order to do better as a group, while honing skills such as very impromptu debating (with only 15 minutes preparation), writing and test-taking.

They also develop impressive breadth and depth of knowledge in a range of subejcts—from the music of Beethoven to the Hunters and Collectors, the mysteries of missing civilisations to the new world of enabling technologies, or the examination of marginalised elements of society to neglected elements of human history. Most impressive for 12 to 15 year-olds!
