Talking to kids makes them smart

Parenting Ideas is an online community connecting parents and educators with expert child development knowledge. Their aim is to help people successfully raise confident, happy and resilient kids. Over the course of nearly twenty years, they’ve become one of Australia’s most trusted sources of parenting education and support. I regularly share articles and information with CHAC parents that I believe offer helpful advice, tips and explanations associated with raising children of all ages.

This week's recommended reading is an article by Parenting Ideas expert Michael Grose, which suggests that by engaging children regularly in conversation, parents can impart their knowledge, wisdom and thoughts while gaining access to the way their children think. In the following article, he outlines a number of strategies to get the chat going at home.

Michael states parents need to be cunning, proactive and inventive to get some chat going at home and suggests these ideas to help:

  • Turn screens off
  • Turn screens on (if you can't beat them, join them)
  • Have regular mealtimes
  • Move more - get some action happening
  • Talk with kids on their own turf
  • Try shoulder-to-shoulder parenting - in the car, washing dishes or playing a game
