Help your anxious teen achieve goals

Parenting Ideas is an online community connecting parents and educators with expert child development knowledge. Their aim is to help people successfully raise confident, happy and resilient kids. Over the course of nearly twenty years, they’ve become one of Australia’s most trusted sources of parenting education and support. I regularly share articles and information with CHAC parents that I believe offer helpful advice, tips and explanations associated with raising children of all ages.

This week's recommended reading is by happiness and wellness speaker and writer Dr Jodi Richardson suggests that instead of waiting for anxiety to pass, the process of setting goals then setting out to achieve them will assist your anxious teen practise ‘goal directed action’. She sets out five steps that empower teenagers to choose behaviours that, despite their anxiety, will build in them the courage and confidence to live rich and meaningful lives. They are:

  1. Start with values
  2. Evaluate top values
  3. Choose a value to work towards
  4. Time to set a goal
  5. Start small
