Calling parents as student mentors

Calling parents as student mentors

Author: Barbara Mossman
Author Role: Gifted and Enterprise Education Coordinator

The College is currently seeking to create a register of parents who would be prepared to serve as a mentor on a student project. In order to equip our students for the “real world”, CHAC is aware that connections with industry knowledge and expertise are vital. Such involvement does not demand much time and generally only involves a few phone calls or emails, but its value to students is immense.

Under the umbrella of CHAC’s new Enterprise Education Faculty, subjects such as the Year 9 Changing Tomorrow elective and the new Year 10 elective, The Project, require students to make connections with adults with specialist knowledge and skills in order to develop major assessment tasks.

In particular, The Project requires each student to nominate a mentor, which is often a difficult task for students whose families may not know anyone working in the area in which their child has developed an interest. We are currently looking for mentors for projects in 2020 in the following areas, but would welcome expressions of interest from anyone who feels they may have something to offer in other fields:

  • Architecture
  • Fashion design
  • Interior Design
  • App Design/IT
  • Children’s book writing
  • Graphic art/digital artistry
  • Animation
  • Artist/illustrator
  • Photography
  • Songwriting
  • Bio-medical research
  • Author
  • Theatrical props design and construction
  • Environmental science

If you are interested in being a mentor, or would like to find out more, please register here. Please feel free to contact Ms Barbara Mossman, Coordinator of Gifted and Enterprise Education, directly by emailing bmossman@chac.qld.edu.au.
