In December 2017, CHAC took three teams of Volleyball players to Melbourne to compete in the Australian Volleyball School Cup – Years 10 and 11 boys and a mix of Years 10 and 11 girls.
Leading into the tournament we were well prepared and we had some strong lead-up games against other schools. We went into the competition positively while being aware that it is a very tough competition.
The early start on the Sunday morning had us all raring to take on the meetings, sign-on and opening ceremony. Not even the downpour as we arrived was going to dampen our spirits as we were here to play Volleyball. At the venue, there were masses of excited players who also were ready to play. For the first time, the divisions were based on year levels instead of birth dates, meaning we were less certain of the level of play for each division.
All three teams started the week with impressive Volleyball and well-earned wins over opponents. This play and commitment continued throughout the week and saw all three teams make the top four teams in the respective divisions. The Year 10 boys narrowly lost the semi-final but played off for, and won, a bronze medal. The Year 11 boys' and girls' teams progressed all the way to the final. Both teams fought hard but fell short and came home with a silver medal.
It was an awesome week watching the students grow and improve in confidence and skill level. I hope they bring these newly acquired skills to their TAS games, to pave the way for a TAS premiership as well.
I would like to thank Mr Spindler, Miss Stick, Mrs Myles and all the coaches for the great effort they made to support and coach the students. A very big thank you also to the families of these students, who made it possible for us to attend training before the trip and who supported us while we were away.
